Two residents had their vehicles stolen while they were left running unattended in the past week.

The most recent incident occurred Tuesday evening in the 1000 block of Front Street. Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said a 1996 Geo Tracker was stolen by unidentified suspects.

On Saturday, around 3:45 a.m., a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban was taken from the driveway of a home in the 500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue while it was left running unattended.

Ferrelli said investigators spotted the stolen Suburban around 5 p.m. Tuesday parked in the 700 block of Concord Street. Officers set up surveillance, and waited to see if anyone would approach the vehicle.

About an hour later, two male juveniles – one from Aurora, and one from Carpentersville – got into the car.

When officers took action, the 17-year-old suspect fled from the scene. He was caught in the 300 block of Evans Avenue. The 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody inside the vehicle, Ferrelli said.

Officers searched the suspects and located a handgun on the 16-year-old. He was charged with two counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member.

The 17-year-old suspect was charged with one count of felony unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member, and felony possession of a stolen vehicle.
