An armed man walked into an unlocked Aurora apartment early Monday morning and demanded money from the resident while holding him at knifepoint, Aurora police said.

The 41-year-old victim told police he was alone in his apartment in the 1000 block of Liberty Street around 4:17 a.m. when the home invasion occurred.

He said a man, between 35 and 40 years old entered his apartment and pulled out a pocket knife. Police said the suspect demanded money from the resident, and was given an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, the victim was led out of his apartment by the robber, but was able to break free. Ferrelli said the victim began yelling, and ran up a set of stairs to seek help.

The suspect allegedly followed the man up the stairs, and was approached by two male residents who had come to the victim’s aid.

Police said the residents, ages 42 and 55, attempted to fight-off the suspect. The robber then allegedly grabbed a piece of wood from the hallway and struck the 55-year-old in the head.

Ferrelli said the blow caused a cut to the victim’s head, but he refused medical treatment.

Following the fight, the suspect ran away, Ferrelli said.

The suspect was described as a black man with a light complexion, with black short hair, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 to 190 pounds and between 35 and 40 years old. He was wearing a black, puffy coat, dark pants, and a black hat.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Aurora police investigators at 630-256-5500.
