A Naperville man facing a felony charge after a loaded handgun was found in his carry-on luggage Tuesday afternoon at Midway Airport was chided as “foolish and arrogant” by a judge.

Kevin W. Reed, 28, faces one felony count of attempting to board an aircraft with a weapon, according to Chicago Police.

Reed was passing through a TSA security checkpoint at Midway a few minutes after 3 p.m. when an X-ray screener discovered the gun in his bag, according to police and TSA officials. He was preparing to board a flight to Detroit.

Police arrested Reed and recovered the gun, a loaded .38 caliber Taurus Titan, according to a TSA spokesman.

Reed, who appeared in court Wednesday wearing a maroon shirt, gray jacket and jeans, said he had driven to Kentucky and forgot the weapon was still in his bag.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Reed, of the 1000 block of North Mill Street in Naperville, on electronic monitoring. However, because Reed lives outside Cook County and can’t be in the program, he has instead been assigned to pre-trial services.

Bourgeois chastised Reed for being “foolish and arrogant” for bringing a gun to the airport.

Reed’s attorney Dustin Smith said her client is recently married, works for Bank of America, and serves on the boards of some charity organizations. He added that Reed has a valid FOID card.

The weapon is the first discovered in carry-on luggage at Midway in 2015, according to the TSA. Six firearms were discovered at the airport in 2014.
