An Aurora Dollar Tree employee reported that a masked person attempted to rob him Thursday evening as he left the store with a bank bag full of cash.
The assistant store manager of the business in the 1900 block of West Galena Boulevard said that he locked up the store around 10:50 p.m. and headed toward his minivan, which was unlocked in the parking lot.
When he got inside the van, the victim said that a person wearing a ski mask was lying in wait on the floor behind the passenger seat.
According to police, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the man and asked him to “give up everything you got.”
Police said the victim quickly exited the van with the bank deposit bag and fled toward the store.
The suspect, who was dressed in all black and wearing gloves, got out of the van and ran away, police said.
The victim said he went to the bank to deposit the money, and called police to report the attempted robbery when he arrived home around midnight.
This was the second victim to report being held at gunpoint during a robbery in Aurora this week. On Wednesday, a man reported that he was driving near East New York Street and State Street at around 5:22 p.m. when he was flagged down by someone on the street.
The victim claimed that the suspect approached him and held a gun against his head. The suspect demanded money, which the victim gave him. The victim said he had $455 in cash on him that he was on his way to deposit.
Aurora police officers and police dogs searched the area for the robber, who allegedly ran away eastbound on New York Street.
Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call Aurora police investigators at 630-256-5500.
