Two vehicles that appeared to be drag racing sped past an Aurora police officer early Sunday morning, leading to a traffic stop that ended in drug charges.

Aurora police said that around 9:40 a.m. an officer was parked near Farnsworth Avenue and Coolidge Avenue keeping an eye out for traffic violations. During his patrol, the officer said a black pickup truck and a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix went speeding past his car as if the drivers were drag racing.

Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the officer followed the Grand Prix to the 1300 block of Front Street, where he was able to pull the vehicle over. The driver was identified as Royelio Rojas, 18, 600 block of East Downer Place, police said.

During the stop, the officer allegedly smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of Rojas’ vehicle turned up two smoking pipes, and 5.3 grams of marijuana, Ferrelli said.

Rojas was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and drag racing, police said.
